Heart on a Hook

one swallow doesn't make a summer

Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken. Albert Camus said that once. You may have heard it in some romantic comedy starring Katherine Heigl. The rest of this quote, however, is where it gets good. And relevant. Camus then goes on to say, If there’s no breaking then there’s no healing, and if there’s no healing then there’s no learning. And if there’s no learning then there’s no struggle. But the struggle is a part of life. So must all hearts be broken? Wha la! There it is. The gut wrenching struggle of heartbreak is how we learn and how we grow, and how we strive to become stronger than we ever imagined possible. I’ve only come across a handful of people who have never had that vital organ that’ s found a little left of the center, behind rib bones and other various parts ripped from them in one quick swipe and crushed into hundreds of tiny pieces. And towards those people, I used to feel envious, but if I’d never felt the aching in my chest caused by unrequited love, I wouldn’t be as capable and secure as I am today. Being in love with someone who doesn’t love you back is something that’s indescribable. It makes for great songs to sob along to in the shower, but there isn’t one word you can use to pinpoint the feeling of not being wanted the way you want someone to want you. But. Accepting things you can’t change or don’t have control over is like pulling a veil from your eyes and watching your once foggy world become way brighter than you ever remembered it being.
